I'm a Purist - Loved the Detail September 5, 2010 Cindye Quilts (Sarasota, FL USA) I've just finished this book for the second time! While others did not like the details, I am a Gabaldon purist, and love every one of them. That is the exact reason no one else writes like her. Beautifully researched, and whatever historical period she is writing about, the reader is THERE, in that time period, on those streets, smelling the smells, tasting the food, and experiencing medicine in the time of the revolution. Diana is a brilliant author, and handles the transitions of her charachters from book to book like no other. I also appreciate the length of the books. For readers like me, the longer the better! I have never once found any part of any of her books boring. I love all the little details leading up to important events in history. Often, these are overlooked, and I have always appreciated her thoroughness.
I love how the series has now evolved to handle the "switching" of storylines. Bottom line, I've been reading this series since the very first book, and am glad it has evolved into giving us more detail of each of them. I think anything LESS would be disappointing. I purchase them when they first come out in hardback, and then when the paperback editions are available, I purchase those too!
Like everyone else, I eagerly await the next one, and appreciate that Echo contains the same rich, historical detail that I have come to love and look forward to in this series!
I not only anticipate rejoining Claire and Jamie, but also Bree, Roger, William, John, Jenny, and all the rest of the cast!
a bit disappointing... September 3, 2010 nichols karen 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found the book entertaining and not boring as some readers felt. However, I do have to agree that cliffhangers are one thing (usually one per story), but the ENTIRE storyline? I also don't consider life-and-death situations qualifying as a cliffhangers (particularly several at the same time). To me it feels more like incomplete work.
I am under the impression that some external event had a profound effect on the book. What? I don't know, could be so many things such as DG suddenly becoming tired of the story and wanted to finish quickly, or the publisher may have pushed to keep the deadline and sent it to print before the story was finished, or something else. Whatever happened, the book was finished in an awful hurry. The story goes through a leisurely pace (some think slow), I didn't mind though. However, the speed suddenly changes dramatically from a stroll to a dizzying rush and one arrives there not knowing exactly how one got there. Worse than that. with the distinct feeling as one reader put it: the book ended but the story wasn't finished...
Unfortunately, it will take another 3-4 years to see the next one. That's much too long for this kind of suspense. I don't want to say more so as not to run the risk of giving a "spolier" to those who haven't read yet.
Don't take me wrong - I'm addicted to this series and one of DGs greatest fans. I guess that I have just come to expect more from DG than this book had to offer.
Too many characters. August 23, 2010 Gerard Garcia (Irvine, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After so many books in the series, I don't really feel like I'm reading, but that I'm following the lives of someone I actually know. I admit that I didn't enjoy the stories of Brianna and Roger, Lord John Grey and William, as much as I enjoy reading about Jamie and Claire. There are so many people and places to follow now that the writing has to jump around and get choppy.
There seem to be too many coincidences in this book....too many people who "just happen" to run into each other when they need each other.
What I hated the most about this book was the constant reminding that Jamie is getting old and that he is going to die soon.
Quickly shipped....perfectly described August 22, 2010 Jaime 0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Gabaldon August 20, 2010 KdR 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have really enjoyed the whole series, but I was frustrated with the end of this volume. Too many things were introduced too close to the end and left us hanging!
In my opinion, it is ok to leave something unresolved to draw the reader toward the next book, but this time Gabaldon did not achieve the satisfying end of all the previous volumes.
Once again, it is a great series and I am an ardent admirer!
